Red envelope gifting is a Chinese New Year tradition that has become digitized as a result of advanced payment processing; the January 27 weekend marks the beginning of the Chinese New Year and the country is expected to transact over 100 billion digital envelopes, an increase from 32 billion in 2015 which reported a 1,000% increase from the prior year; payment processors integrated with social media have increasingly been gaining market share and supporting digital transaction growth; bitcoin transactions are also expected to increase for the Chinese New Year. Micro-lenders in China have brought billions of packaged consumer loans to institutional investors in China; the market this year though may slow due to regulatory scrutiny according industry sources; the current leaders in this space include Ant Financial Services Group as well as groups within JD.com, Baidu, VIPShop Holdings and Xiaomi Technology. Shanghai-based marketplace lender, Lufax, has announced it will be expanding its business into Hong Kong and Singapore; firm also announced plans in September for a Hong Kong-listed IPO which is expected to raise approximately $5 billion; company will leverage its relationship with Ping An for the expansion; funding for the expansion will also be supported by a $1.2 billion fundraise from earlier in the year. Chinese P2P lender Dianrong is looking to implement blockchain across their entire company to enhance transparency and security for their customers; this is in addition to a recently announced partnership with Taiwan-based Foxconn to launch a blockchain startup called Chained Finance; according to CoinDesk Dianrong's blockchain plans are detailed on their website and they explain using an ethereum-based solution designed to facilitate tamper-proof loan contracts, donations to charity and credit management; Dianrong is also rumored to go public sometime in the near future, though IPO talk has been discussed for a few years. The People's Bank of China (PBOC) is testing digital currency in efforts to become one of the first central banks to issue digital money; China's population has been increasingly using digital forms of payment with approximately 450 billion mobile users reported in 2016; a cryptocurrency would likely be popular among consumers and is also expected to lower transaction costs for sellers; a digital currency could also help the PBOC to more efficiently manage risks in the financial system and economy with a better way for tracking transactions; the PBOC has outlined how a digital currency would work but it has not announced a specific timeline for implementation. Naspers is the most valuable listed company in Africa and is now selling $10 billion worth of shares in Tencent to invest in fintech, classified and online food delivery businesses; Naspers stake in Tencent is estimated at $545 billion; this is the first time the company has sold shares in the company after initially investing in 2001.
